How to Use This Tavern Encounter Table
When your players enter a tavern, roll a d20 and read the matching entry aloud — or simply pick whichever one fits the mood. Each generated table blends four types of content:
- NPCColorful patrons — memorable characters who can become recurring NPCs, quest-givers, or red herrings.
- EventLive action beats — something that happens right now, in the room, that demands a reaction.
- HookAdventure seeds — mysteries, requests, and discoveries that can spin out into full sessions.
- AmbianceAtmospheric details — the uncanny, the eerie, the small wrong thing that makes the place feel alive.
All entries are written for D&D 5e but work equally well in any fantasy TTRPG. The pool of 88+ entries is large enough that two consecutive rerolls will almost never produce the same table.
Tips for Running Great Tavern Scenes
Seed before arrival
Roll the table before the players reach town and decide which result fits best. You get the variety of random without the awkward pause mid-scene.
Stack two results
Roll twice and combine. A suspicious NPC + an event creates instant drama. An atmosphere entry layered under a hook turns a routine scene unsettling.
Let players bite
Not every hook needs to be followed. Lay out 2–3 options and let the party choose what interests them. The ones they ignore become background lore.
